The Sigma Chi Fraternity was founded on June 28, 1855, by seven men at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. For over 165 years, Sigma Chi has been guided by its core values: Friendship, Justice, and Learning.
The Fraternity has undergraduate chapters in both the United States and Canada. At each of its chapters, the Fraternity recruits new men to join our brotherhood of transformational leaders. Our vision is to inspire and empower our brothers to positively impact the world.

Sigma Chi is committed to the timeless principles of Friendship, Justice, and Learning. We also strive to embody seven virtues in our daily lives:
New members of Sigma Chi learn more about these principles and virtues through our award-winning Foundational Leadership program, which consists of Preparation for Brotherhood (P4B) and Ritual for Life (RFL).
The confidence of the Founders of Sigma Chi was based upon a belief that the principles which they professed and the ideal of the Fraternity which they sought were but imperfectly realized in the organizations by which they were surrounded.
The standard with which the Fraternity started was declared by Isaac M. Jordan to be that of admitting no man to membership in Sigma Chi who is not believed to be:
The Spirit of Sigma Chi, as conceived by the Founders more than 165 years ago yet visible and alive today, is based on the theory that...
...Friendship among members, sharing a common belief in an ideal...
...and possessing different temperaments, talents, and convictions,...
...is superior to friendship among members having the same temperaments, talents, and convictions, and that...
...Genuine friendship can be maintained without surrendering the principle of individuality or sacrificing one's personal judgment.
I believe in fairness, decency and good manners. I will endeavor to retain the spirit of youth. I will try to make my college, the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and my own chapter more honored by all men and women and more beloved and honestly respected by our own brothers. I say these words in all sincerity; That Sigma Chi has given me favor and distinction; that the bond of our fellowship is reciprocal, that I will endeavor to so build myself and so conduct myself that I will ever be a credit to our Fraternity.
- George Ade, Purdue 1887
Our Badge is the Sigma Chi cross of gold, and of white and black enamel, bearing two chains, crossed keys, an eagle's head, a scroll, clasped hands, seven stars, and the Greek letters ΣΧ.
Our Coat of Arms is a Norman shield of blue bearing a white Sigma Chi cross. The shield is surmounted by a scroll in white and blue and a crest of an eagle's head holding a key of gold. Our public motto is placed below the shield on a scroll.
Our Seal is circular, with the name "Sigma Chi Fraternity" and the numerals "1855" around the outer edge. In the center are seven stars above a seven-branched candlestick.
Our colors are Blue and Old Gold.
Our flower is the White Rose.
Our public motto is "In Hoc Signo Vinces."
It is often translated as "In this sign you will conquer."
We think a more accurate translation is:
"Take this sign and go out and conquer!"
