How to Join Our Brotherhood

Requirements

At a minimum, you must meet the following criteria to join the Kappa Psi Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity:

  • Be a male student in good academic standing at the University of Tennessee at Martin
  • Have a college GPA of 2.75 or higher; incoming freshmen without a college GPA must either have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher or have graduated in the top 25% of their class
  • Must not be a member of another fraternity of a similar character to Sigma Chi; that is, any other collegiate social fraternity, such as the other members of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC)

Furthermore, the opportunity to join our Fraternity will not be extended to any man unless we believe him to be:

  • A Man of Good Character
  • A Student of Fair Ability
  • With Ambitious Purposes
  • A Congenial Disposition
  • Possessed of Good Morals
  • Having a High Sense of Honor and
  • A Deep Sense of Personal Responsibility.

Statement on Diversity

As Sigma Chis, we seek men to join our ranks who share a common belief in our ideals, but who have "different temperaments, talents, and convictions." This is because we know that such diversity strengthens our brotherhood. We are NOT looking for men who fit some cookie-cutter mold or who look, think, speak, or act exactly like we do. We believe that "genuine friendship can be maintained without surrendering the principle of individuality or sacrificing one's personal judgment."

In like manner, we do not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, regional or socioeconomic background, etc.

First Steps

Whether you think you're ready to join right now, or you want to meet some of the Brothers, or you have some questions or concerns you'd like answered, feel free to reach out to our Recruitment Chair. Our current Recruitment Chair is Allen Jones, and you can reach him by email using the button below. Please let him know if you'd like to meet in person, have a phone call, or just exchange emails or text messages. Either way, Allen or another Brother will be sure to follow up with you.

What to Expect

Near the beginning of each semester, we participate in UT Martin's IFC formal recruitment, also known as "Rush Week." This is a time for potential new fraternity members to meet brothers at every chapter on the UT Martin campus. It's also a time for us to get to know you. To participate in IFC formal recruitment, submit this interest form via Runway. (We sometimes also recruit new members at other times between Rush Weeks. If you missed Rush Week, you may not need to wait until next semester to join.)

If we feel that you would be a good fit for Sigma Chi and our Chapter, we will extend an invitation to join, also known as a "Bid." By accepting this Bid, you are committing to a five-week process called Preparation for Brotherhood, or P4B. This period between recruitment and Initiation is commonly called "Pledgeship." The P4B program is a unique, award-winning learning experience designed to get you familiar with Sigma Chi, our History, our Ideals, and what will be expected of you as a Brother.

Pledges who successfully complete the P4B program are given to opportunity to formally join Sigma Chi through the Ceremonies of Initiation. This requires a lifelong commitment to the Fraternity, to our Chapter, and most importantly to our ideals of Friendship, Justice, and Learning. After Initiation, new Brothers complete the Ritual for Life (R4L) program, which helps deepen their understanding of their Initiation and their obligations to our Fraternity. Brothers may also experience other learning programs, such as the Krach Transformational Leaders Workshop, Huntsman Horizons Leadership Summit, the Mission 365 Recruitment Program, Officer Training Academy, and many more.
